OPINION WRITING:
Opinion writing serves as an opportunity to explore exciting and controversial topics. This genre allows me to recall my own experiences, support them with research, and formulate my stance on issues important to me.

Stop the stereotypes about eating disorders
After reflecting on my own struggles with body image and disordered eating habits, I sought to write a piece highlighting the harmful effects of eating disorder stereotypes. I recognized that media portrayals of those with eating disorders generally only covered a certain demographic. Ultimately, I hoped that my coverage of this topic would remind readers of the dangers brought by eating disorders. Regardless of race, gender, age, or size, anyone can struggle through the life-threatening mental and physical consequences of eating disorders.

Intersectionality is key to modern feminism
As I was learning about the women’s rights movements in AP United States History during my junior year, I realized that the benefits brought by the first two waves of feminism benefitted primarily white, cisgender, and upper-middle class women. To cover the topic of intersectionality properly, I researched how Black women specifically were excluded from the same rights they fought tirelessly for. As America transitions into a new wave of feminism, it is vital to view the movement with an intersectional lens and recognize its wrongdoings.

Plastic is only part of the problem
Seeking to report on sea life destruction with a unique angle, I decided to focus on the issue of corrupted overfishing. While plastic plays a significant role in damaging ocean life, the fishing industry is an overlooked aspect of of ecosystem destruction. Combined with fishing gear pollution, overfishing harms the delicate balance of the ocean in a major way.
Editorial: Greenwashing is a dangerous practice
Every issue of Highlander, I also write an editorial to go in the opinion section. For issue 2, there were multiple environmental-related articles, and I knew it was a good opportunity to write about corporate greenwashing. As a topic I had been studying about for a while, I noticed the effects of this phenomenon in my day-to-day life. Every time I stepped into a grocery store or pharmacy, I saw items labeled “eco-friendly” or “green,” only to find out they were no better for the environment than any similar product from other companies.
You can view this editorial in issue 2 of the Highlander.
