NEWS WRITING:

My news writing process featured plenty of late nights and early mornings planning sources, drafting interview questions, and listening back to long strings of Otter.ia recordings. But in the end of every story, I find satisfaction in delivering important stories to my community.

Saving lives 22 miles at a time

When I first heard about a local firefighter hiking across coastal California to raise awareness for veteran suicide, I knew I had to get an interview and share his story. Determined, I contacted his team and drove nearly 4 hours away at 5 a.m. to meet up with him at his morning starting point. In the deeply personal interview I had with him, as tears rushed down his face and the pain of his journey settled in, I struggled to keep professional journalistic composure. As my brief hike with him came to an end, I set out to write an article that honored him and his mission.

Finding beauty in the ashes

This piece intended to highlight an often unseen part of our community; a monthly art installation that featured local artists with a goal of spreading impactful messages through their work. The artists involved often take inspiration from current events or social justice issues. In particular, this showcase represented the recent spur of devastating California wildfires and their impact on people across the state.

Zoetic Tapestry Project weaves art into the community

While on an afternoon stroll through a garden in my community, I noticed a discrete gallery showcasing beautiful artwork inside and out. After contacting the founders and artists involved, I wrote a story that captured their journey and strive to unite the community through art. Over a year later, I came back to the gallery to create a news video report, which you can view here.
